Structural Steel on a Monumental Scale
Genis Steel is proud to be working alongside Qanstruct on the delivery of structural steel for ALDI’s new Melbourne Automated Distribution Centre in Tarneit, Victoria.
Spanning approximately 100,000 square metres, this significant industrial development showcases the scale, precision and specialist expertise required to fabricate and erect structural steel for one of Melbourne’s major new logistics facilities.
With approximately 7,500 tonnes of structural steel incorporated across the roof structures and mezzanine levels, the project demonstrates Genis Steel’s capability to manage complex, large-scale structural steel packages from fabrication through to site erection.
Structural steel construction at an impressive scale
The size and height of the ALDI Melbourne Automated Distribution Centre make this a particularly impressive structural steel project.
The facility incorporates two high-bay structures reaching approximately 42 metres in height, with a 28-metre-high central low bay positioned between them. Together, these structures form the framework for an advanced warehousing and distribution facility designed to maximise storage capacity and operational efficiency.
Genis Steel’s scope includes approximately:
- 5,000 tonnes of structural steel for the roof structures
- 2,500 tonnes of structural steel for the mezzanine levels
- Structural steel fabrication, coordination and erection across the large-scale facility
On a project of this magnitude, accuracy at every stage is critical. Fabrication tolerances, delivery sequencing, site coordination and erection methodology all need to work together to ensure the structural steel can be installed safely and efficiently while supporting the wider construction programme.
Precision fabrication and complex steel erection
High-bay warehouse construction creates a very different set of challenges to conventional structural steel projects.
Working at heights exceeding 40 metres requires detailed erection planning, specialist rigging techniques, temporary structural support and carefully coordinated installation sequences.
Just as importantly, the structural steel erection programme must integrate with the activities of builders, consultants, services contractors and other trades working across the site.
Working closely with Qanstruct and the broader project team, Genis Steel has focused on coordinating structural requirements, access, logistics and construction sequencing to help keep this major Melbourne industrial development progressing efficiently.
Structural steel for the next generation of logistics facilities
Modern automated distribution centres require structural steel systems capable of supporting increasingly sophisticated warehousing environments.
Once operational, the ALDI Melbourne Automated Distribution Centre will incorporate advanced warehousing technology and temperature-controlled storage as part of ALDI’s expanding distribution network.
For Genis Steel, the project highlights the depth of capability required to successfully deliver large-scale industrial structural steel fabrication and erection.
From complex high-bay steel structures to extensive mezzanine systems, the project demonstrates how careful planning, quality fabrication, experienced project management and coordinated site erection come together on major industrial and logistics developments.
It also reinforces Genis Steel’s capability to support builders and developers delivering technically demanding warehouses, distribution centres and industrial facilities across Melbourne and Victoria.
