ALDI Melbourne Automated Distribution Centre

Genis Steel is proud to work alongside Qanstruct to deliver ALDI’s new Melbourne Automated Distribution Centre in Tarneit, Victoria. Spanning approximately 100,000 square metres, this major industrial development represents an impressive feat of structural steel engineering, fabrication and construction.

Designed to support ALDI’s expanding supply chain operations, the state-of-the-art facility combines advanced automation and high-capacity warehousing with a complex structural steel framework. With approximately 7,500 tonnes of steel required across the roof structures and mezzanine levels, the project demonstrates the scale, capability and expertise Genis Steel brings to major industrial developments.

Built on scale and precision

The structure’s sheer size and height present significant challenges that demand careful planning, precise fabrication, and specialist erection expertise.

The facility incorporates two high-bay structures reaching 42 metres in height, separated by a central low-bay structure standing 28 metres high. Together, these expansive structures create the framework for a highly advanced distribution facility designed to maximise storage capacity and operational efficiency.

Genis Steel’s scope encompasses approximately 5,000 tonnes of structural steel for the roof structures and a further 2,500 tonnes for the mezzanine levels. At this scale, accuracy and coordination are critical. From fabrication and delivery through to site installation, every stage requires a carefully considered approach to ensure the steelwork can be erected safely, efficiently and in accordance with the construction programme.

Managing complex construction requirements

High-bay construction introduces unique engineering and logistical considerations, particularly when working at heights exceeding 40 metres. Specialist rigging techniques, temporary structural propping and carefully planned erection sequences all play an important role in managing the installation process. Equally important is ensuring that the steelwork integrates with the wider construction programme, allowing other trades and services to progress efficiently.

Working closely with Qanstruct, consultants and other project stakeholders, the Genis Steel team has focused on coordinating structural requirements, site access and construction sequencing to support the delivery of this substantial development.

Supporting the next generation of logistics

Once operational, the ALDI Melbourne Automated Distribution Centre will incorporate advanced warehousing technology and temperature-controlled storage to support the retailer’s distribution network. For Genis Steel, the project highlights the team’s ability to deliver large-scale, technically demanding structural steel packages where precision, planning and collaboration are essential.

From complex high-bay structures to extensive mezzanine systems, the project reflects Genis Steel’s commitment to delivering quality steel fabrication and erection solutions for Australia’s growing industrial and logistics sectors.
