Largest modular build in the Southern Hemisphere takes shape

Genis Steel modular at Geelong worked with build partner Modscape, and an additional fabricator, to build a new mental health facility at the Northern Hospital. 

The Genis Steel team produced 254 modules for the 4-storey build, with each module up to 5.5 metres wide, 18 metres long and 3 metres high – the equivalent of 100 buildings. The mental health facility became the largest modular build within the Southern Hemisphere. 

The team worked closely with Modscape’s architectural drafting team to develop the technical shop drawings and held regular meetings to address any issues or discrepancies that arose. Communication between all collaborators was extremely important to make sure that the fast-moving project stayed on track. Overall, the client saved about 6 months in build time on site by using a modular system. The project was so successful that it became the blueprint for the new Sunshine Hospital in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Fly through the facility.
